2011-2012 LV FLAMES TEAM NEWS ARCHIVE

Bantam A Moves On to Districts; DVHL Playoff Wrap Up

MARCH 11, 2012 — Five Teams represented the Flames at the DVHL playoffs over the past two weekends: Squirt AA, Bantam A, Bantam AA, Midget 16A Red, and Midget 18AA. All members of the Flames organization, congratulate these teams on their success this season. Beyond these teams however, a wider congratulations to every team who proudly wore the Flames crest in this, our inaugural season. We are all proud of your ongoing commitment to youth hockey and the Lehigh Valley Flames.

Special congratulations to the Bantam A team, who powered through their playoff round in only two games, defeating the Delaware Jr. Blue Hens and the Exton Kings in route to becoming DVHL Playoff Champs. The Bantams will represent the Flames at Districts at Mennen Arena in Morris, NJ. (Schedule here.)

Here are two clips from the final moments of the game:

Bantam A; Midget 16A-Red – Flames Throw Back-to-Back Shutouts at Glaciers

The Flames Bantam A team shutout the Glaciers 4-0, and the Flames Midget 16A Red team followed it up with a 2-0 blanking of the Glaciers in Warminster today. The Bantams held a 1-0 lead midway through the third period, when they piled on 3 more goals to put the game away. They had almost 70 shots on goal in the game. Goaltender Tyler Baumann was solid in goal, blanking the Glaciers. Immediately after an ice cut, the Flames Midget 16A team (11-1-2) took the ice in a key DVHL matchup with the Glaciers (12-2-1). Midway through the second period, the Flames notched 2 goals in a thirty second span, then shut down the Glaciers with Jordan Lorah coming up big for the Flames.

Congratulations to Joe Ryan, Nick Shahin, and Austin Mininger for being chosen to be a part of the DVHL Bantam All Star East VS. West Game.  The boys played an exciting game on Sunday, March 25 in Exton where they teamed up with some of their biggest rivals.  They represented the Flames organization well and were responsible for 1 goal and 2 assists of the 4 points their team scored.

Midget 16A-Red – Flames Defeat NJ Stars in “Mini Winter Classic”

Lehigh Valley Flames Logo Text OnlyJanuary 8, 2012. Bethlehem PA. The Lehigh Valley Flames Midget 16A Red team took their game outdoors this weekend as they took on the NJ Stars in non-league action at the Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink. It was the first Flames Midget game played at the outdoor facility, and the temperature was perfect for hockey on a Sunday morning, with the temperature hovering around 40 degrees.

The Flames carried the bulk of the action to the Stars, outshooting them 30-15 after two periods, but couldn’t crack Stars goaltender Tommy Mezaros. The score after 2 periods was 0-0. Finally, with 6:30 remaining in the game in a 4-on-4 situation, Flames forward Eric “Tank” Tanczos put a backhander through the pads of the Stars goaltender to put the Flames on top 1-0. Two minutes later, the Stars scored on the power play to even up the score. Flames goaltender Jordan Lorah came up with some timely saves during a continuing shorthanded situation that followed. Finally, with 1:54 remaining and still on the penalty kill, Flames center Anthony Shahin swung wide on the Stars defense and scored shorthanded to put the Flames on top to stay. It capped a 5 goal weekend for Shahin, who scored 4 times against the Delaware Jr. Blue Hens the day before.

Shots on goal for the game were 39-24 in favor of the Flames.

Thanks to the folks at the Municipal rink for hosting great morning of hockey, and to the NJ Stars for making the trip to Pennsylvania.

Midget 16A-Red – Flames Gray Hoodies – Are In!

If you haven’t yet ordered one of these bad boys — now is your chance! These are the really nice gray hoodies with the Flames Alternate logo on the front, with the optional name and number personalization. Maybe you have seen these around the rink and were wondering where you could get yours… Well, now you know. Order soon for Christmas delivery by clicking here.

Midget 16A-Red – Why being a good teammate matters.

Brad McCrimmon, former Flyer and veteran of 5 other NHL teams was on the plane that crashed in Russia that took the lives of entire Lokomotiv Russian hockey team.

Maybe the biggest influence he had in hockey was the vital role he played in the early stages of the careers of several future Hall of Fame players.

Please take 2 minutes out of your day to read this and learn a very important lesson: How you play — and what you say and do — can make a huge difference to your teammates… and your friends.

Midget 18AA – Takes New England by surprise

The Lehigh Valley Flames youth hockey, 18AA entered Foxboro Sports Center in Massachusetts on October 8th the clear underdog.  Facing brackets that included 3 of the top 10 18AAA teams in the nation the Flames had their own Battle of Bunker Hill ahead.   Examples of Tier 1 AAA graduates include former Flyer Goaltender Ron Hextall, current Flyers prospect Brayden Schenn and Chicago Alternate Captain Patrick Kane.  By Monday the Flames found themselves in the semi-finals facing the #10 nationally ranked Southshore Dynamos losing 2-0, ending the weekend 2-1-1.  Flames coach, Mark Spease stated, “Taking a team from the Lehigh Valley and heading to a state where hockey is king to play against all AAA teams is intimidating and potentially disastrous.  We’ve now played in 2 AAA tournaments, made the semi-finals in both.  I am very proud of the young men, they represented both the Lehigh Valley and Flames organization incredibly well. We look forward to bringing that type of intensity and play back to the Lehigh Valley and DVHL [Delaware Valley Hockey League].  I think we have the makings of a very memorable season.”

Midget 18AA – Clash Of The Titans — Flames vs Ice Dogs U18AA

This Saturday, February 11th at 2 PM one of the most intense rivalries in Eastern PA hockey will arrive at the Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem. The Lehigh Valley Flames and the Hatfield Ice Dogs U18AA will meet for the 2nd time this season and the stakes are high for both league play and district tournament seeding. Both teams are competitive and recognized on a National stage. The Ice Dogs are ranked 5th Nationally and the Flames are 2nd in the standings with a loss by a goal at the Ice Dogs home arena at the beginning of the season.

For a quick background on both teams, the “AA” level Flames recently traveled to the Boston Region to compete in a Tier I “AAA” tournament facing some of the top Tier I teams in the country leaving 2-1-1 with their only loss coming it the semi-finals and a recent 5-2 victory over the #5 Nationally, at that time, ranked 18AA CP Dynamo from NY state at home. The Ice Dogs were the 2010-2011 U18AA USA Hockey National Champions with members returning to defend their title this season. Service 2 Sports may be there for highlight film, would be great to have a packed house! Look forward to seeing everyone there in support!

Midget 18AA – Defeat Dynamo 5-2 in Midget 18AA Action!

The Lehigh Valley Flames Midget 18AA team took on CP Dynamo on Saturday, November 19th, In front of a packed house the Steel Ice Center and came away with a convincing 5-2 victory. The Flames jumped out to a 2 goal lead early, but Dynamo — ranked 6th in the Country at the 18AA level — evened up the score at the end of the first. But that would be the only scoring Dynamo would manage on this night. The Flames tacked on 3 more goals to defeat Dynamo 5-2. Recently, the Flames have hovered around the #15 spot in the rankings. With this victory they will certainly be moving up the rankings again.

This was a game marked by great effort, great intensity, and awesome support and attendance from the entire Flames organization. Thank you to everyone that came to support Flames Nation!

Squirt Patriot – Concussion Education Information

This came to via Dr. Alan Ashare, Chairman of USA Hockey’s Safety and Protective Committee.

Concussions in sports are a very, very hot topic.  There has been more published in the medical journals about concussions, return to play following head trauma, and concussion management in the last decade than in the previous eighty years by a factor of ten.  We are learning a lot.

The concept of developing cerebral traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from just a few incidents of head trauma(as seen from the work of Dr. Anne McKee at Boston University) is a concern for parents, players, and coaches.  Some doctors have questioned whether or not children should be allowed to play contact-collision sports before the age of 14.  (Check out the recent recommendations of concussion expert Dr. Robert Cantu from Boston.)

Girls and women are not immune from concussions.  In fact, females have a greater incidence of concussions than males in both ice hockey and soccer.

Over forty states have passed legislation mandating documented trainingin recognizing concussions and concussion management for coaches, parents, players, and administrators. For the most part, this legislation involves interscholastic sports in public schools and middle schools.  However, some states have included youth sports in this legislative mandate.

THIS CONCUSSION TRAINING (IN MOST STATES) IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY!!

USA Hockey would like to get everyone involved in concussion education.  We want to have educated board members, staff members, committee members, and officers and committees of our affiliates, and then we want to educate every hockey parent, every player, every coach, and every administrator.

Get educated!

Some of you may have already attended a head trauma seminar, or taken a concussion on-line course, and that’s great.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the National Federation of High Schools has an on-line course in concussion recognition and concussion management. www.nfhslearn.com (Please see attached)

It takes about 25 minutes, asks you some questions, and then provides you with a certificate (suitable for framing) that you’ve taken the course.  There is no charge for this on-line training.  It also puts you name on a list (by state) that you’ve taken the on-line course.  There are other on-line concussion courses developed by the CDC, but the CDC-NFHS is the one that I’m most familiar with, and it provide documentation.
